  1. To avoid overweight baggage fees, know the weight limit allowed per airline. You should realize the weight limit varies depending on whether the baggage is checked in or carried on the airplane.

Check the website for the airline you're flying. Of course the baggage weight and number of bags allowed greatly increases if you purchase a buiness class or first class ticket - but that won't make travelling any cheaper Sad

Purchase small refillable plastic containers at the local discount store to hold your shampoo, conditioner, face lotions, etc. Remember you are allowed to carry on the plane one quart-size ziploc bag filled with liquids or containers no larger than 3 oz. each. Realize that full-size containers are bulky and will add considerably to the weight of your baggage. Avoid overweight baggage fees by always thinking small.

Consider your wardrobe and footwear carefully according to the planned activities of the trip and whether you will have ready access to laundry facilities. Wherever possible, pack separates that can mix and match with other clothing. This will extend your wardrobe without weighing down baggage.
  2. Pack no more than one pair of comfortable walking shoes and one pair of dress shoes. If you're headed to warmer weather, allow yourself a pair of sandals also. If colder weather, you may want to pack boots.

To avoid overweight baggage fees, weigh your baggage a few hours before you leave home. Step on a bathroom scales without your suitcase and note the weight.

Next, hold your suitcase level in front of you and have a family member or friend read the weight. Subtract your personal weight from the second figure to get the weight of your baggage.

It's a good idea to stay under the allowance by a pound or two in case your scales are not totally accurate.
